What is Pradaxa?

Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals manufactures Pradaxa. Pradaxa is an anticoagulant blood thinner prescribed to treat atrial fibrillation (AF) which reduces the risk of stroke. AF is a heart condition in which the top two chambers of the heart beat erratically and quickly. This results in a decrease of blood leaving the heart. Blood pools in the heart and clots. If the clot leaves the heart and travels to the brain, a person can suffer a stroke. Pradaxa is ingested to reduce the formation of clots.

As a result of ingesting the blood thinner, the body is unable to form blood clots. Under certain circumstances, this has resulted in uncontrolled and fatal bleeding. Common complications cited by consumers ingesting Pradaxa include the following:

  • Gastrointestinal bleeding
  • Cerebral hemorrhaging
  • Severe internal bleeding
  • Coughing up blood
  • Blood in stool or urine
  • Easy burning
  • Joint pains or swelling
  • Nausea
  • Abdominal pain and discomfort

Doctors have recommended kidney dialysis to remove the drug from the body. Some patients however are unable to tolerate dialysis. Currently, there is no antidote for the medication.

Patients at an increased risk of developing complications associated with Pradaxa include the following:

  • Over 75-years-old or older
  • Existing kidney problems
  • Stomach bleeding or an ulcer
  • Consume other drugs that increases the risk of internal bleeding

If you are taking Pradaxa and suffered any of the complications mentioned above, seek immediate medical care. Doing so can save your life. Contact our San Diego California Pradaxa injury lawyers for more information on how to obtain damages for any injuries arising from taking the medication.
