On May 1, 2009 the FDA warned consumers to stop using the dietary supplement Hydroxycut immediately, because of links to serious liver damage, rhabdomyolysis and death. Hydroxycut's manufacturer Iovate Health Sciences has agreed to recall 14 Hydroxycut products. The dietary pills are available at many grocery stores and pharmacies and Hydroxycut is advertised as made from natural ingredients, with at least 9 million packages sold in 2008.

The Hydroxycut recall includes these products:

  • Hydroxycut Regular Rapid Release Caplets
  • Hydroxycut Caffeine-Free Rapid Release Caplets
  • Hydroxycut Hardcore Liquid Capsules
  • Hydroxycut Max Liquid Capsules
  • Hydroxycut Regular Drink Packets
  • Hydroxycut Caffeine-Free Drink Packets
  • Hydroxycut Hardcore Drink Packets (Ignition Stix)
  • Hydroxycut Max Drink Packets
  • Hydroxycut Liquid Shots
  • Hydroxycut Hardcore RTDs (Ready-to-Drink)
  • Hydroxycut Max Aqua Shed
  • Hydroxycut 24
  • Hydroxycut Carb Control
  • Hydroxycut Natural

The FDA has received 23 reports of liver problems, including the death of a 19-year-old boy in 2007. Patients have experienced symptoms ranging from jaundice, or yellowing of the skin, to liver failure. One received a transplant and another was placed on a list to await a new liver. The patients were otherwise healthy and their symptoms began after they started using Hydroxycut.

The FDA doesn't regulate dietary supplements as tightly as medications and the manufacturers don't need to prove to the FDA that their products are safe and effective before they can sell them to consumers. However, regulators do monitor aftermarket reports for signs of trouble, and in recent years companies have been put under stricter requirements to alert the FDA when they learn of problems.

The FDA claims it took so long to get a handle on the Hydroxycut problem because the cases of liver damage were rare and it has no authority to review supplements before they're marketed. They rely only on voluntary reports and many cases are never reported. Health officials have also been unable to determine which Hydroxycut ingredients are potentially toxic, partially because the formulation has changed several times.

Some Hydroxycut Side Effects Include:

  • Nausea / Vomiting
  • Excessive Fatigue / Weakness
  • Stomach / Abdominal Pain
  • Rhabdomyolysis
  • Jaundice (yellowing of the skin)
  • Liver Injuries
  • Liver Failure
  • Liver Transplant
  • Death
